This marks the eighth day that it could not be reached due to the reps who have since taken to places like Chicago and New York and refuse to return. Showing the moment that house speaker Dustin Burrows officially called the house into session, Roberts shared with viewers that the quorum had not yet been met. “Now that was a very aggressive swing of the gavel there, and apparently this is no quorum, so that means the state business will not proceed,” he said.

He then continued, saying that Texas Democrats were “showing no signs of backing down” even as they faced growing fines, threats of arrest, and the potential to be expelled from office. He then cut to correspondent Brooke Taylor, who confirmed that the missing reps had once again not shown up, and efforts were ramping up amongst Republicans to make them face consequences.

Roberts and Smith then came back on after playing Burrows’ speech and warning about the potential issues Democratic lawmakers could face if they did not return to their posts. Roberts went on to lament that they would have to eventually return home, noting that they likely had other responsibilities to attend to as well.

“I mean, it’s pretty obvious where they are, but Texas doesn’t have the jurisdiction to go to where they are to get them and bring them back,” he said, “They’d have to be back in the state to do that, so the standoff continues and is likely to for a while.” “But at some point, those Democrats are going to have to come home, I mean the cat is going to need to be fed.

The dog will need to be let out, so we’ll see.” The state house is set to resume on Tuesday morning, though the Democratic reps are still likely to be absent. Redistricting will remain an issue that cannot be addressed until they return, which is bad news for the president, who has hopes the number of seats will help Republicans retain their razor-thin control of the House in the 2026 midterms.

The Texas Governor has said he intends to exercise his powers to continue calling special sessions in order to prompt the vote.
